Ken Mellor’s Urban Mystic: Discovering the transcendent through everyday life was selected as a Finalist in the Spirituality category of the 2010 Next Generation Indie Book Awards, which placed it in the top five books in this category.
An extraordinary book, it takes hold of us from the first line and carries us through to the end.
A life-changing moment of awakening at the age of 13 started Mellor on his path to realising his goal of mastering meditative and other spiritual practices, and being able to share these with others. In the process, he learnt valuable life lessons from many different teachers—all masters of what they taught and lived. Eventually, he was recognised as a master of meditation and a spiritual teacher, too.
As Mellor draws readers into sharing his life experiences, he gently nudges them towards expanded understanding, awakening, and an appreciation of their unique destiny. He takes the reader through his life in Australia and his travels in the United States, India, England, Switzerland and Germany, doing so with the light touch of an experienced story-teller.
The reader lives his experience with him through his capacity to involve, surprise, and amuse them. There are stories about sailing, learning psychotherapy, being held up by bandits, telepathic sharing, life and death struggles, wonderful exchanges with awakened people, the rigours of having a spiritual master, and much more.
At the same time, Mellor pulls no punches when describing the ups and downs of his spiritual journey, and he takes the reader – fast becoming his friend – on a fascinating journey full of candour, humour, and integrity.
Through his narrative, the author shows how everything in life contributes to spiritual awakening—even everyday struggles—and encourages readers to realise their extraordinary potential to live “a life filled with understanding, joy, love, and a sense of meaningful purpose.”
