When Julius
Ololade and Michael Dawson began dating twin sisters, they
started spending a great deal of time together. Yet, the clash
between American-born blacks and African immigrants caused a
rift between the two men that seemed impossible to surmount.
Julius was
a privileged African from Lagos, Nigeria, newly arrived to the
United States to attend law school at City College in New York
City. Michael was an uneducated Black American, raised by a poor
aunt, who dreamed of being a professional football player. By
chance, their two worlds collided, resulting in the eruption of
massive confrontation. Through love and contest, Julius and
Michael are able to find the strengths and deficiencies of each
society, leading to an eventual reconciliation among a nation of
a race divided.
Through his
experiences living in totalitarian Nigeria and coming to
America, author Bode Olakanmi, writes a beautiful tale of envy,
success, and love that takes you into a world of conflicting
ideals coupled with characters full of real emotions.
