Save the Children!

In fear of annihilation by Russia during World War II, Finland was in a race to save its children. This powerful book about their survival begins in the summer of 1943.

A telephone conversation in Stockholm, Sweden, between Maja Sandler, the wife of Sweden’s foreign minister, and Hana Rudh, the director of the philanthropic Bremmer Foundation, creates a plan for neutral Sweden to temporarily adopt Finland’s children until the war is over.

Within three months, operation “Finska Krigsbarn” becomes the greatest exodus of children in recorded history.

Sunpath is a truly uplifting story, written after painstaking research into both personal accounts by survivors, and the documentation of this harrowing period in world history. It follows the adventures of a 10-year-old child who was part of the Finska Krigsbarn, and whose tenacity proves that love, in spite of war, exists among all people.

“Sunpath draws a vivid image of war and the price that innocent victims pay. Families torn apart – children from their parents – all forced to find new homes in a strange land. The portrait you paint is from the past but all one has to do is turn on the television today and see that somehow humanity never learns. Well done!” Leon Panetta, CIA director

I won't mince words. I was simply overwhelmed by Sunpath. War's devastating impact on children is an oft treated subject, but rarely has a novel of this kind been written with such authenticity and depth of feeling. The physical and emotional landscape you have painted is so palpable that I felt I was living in it. Sunpath’s gripping narrative, vivid atmosphere, and complex characters combine to make this a frightening, wrenching and ultimately gratifying experience for the reader. This is not a good work, it is a great one, and I expect it to be nothing less than a smashing success.” Steven Gorelick, director, New Jersey Motion Picture Commission
