Harold Longs’ God, Are You
Mad at Me? is a personal narration of his struggle with his
past and his long road to salvation.
Harold Longs was born into
poverty and unfathomable violence.
Harold watched his mother
slowly kill herself—through drugs, alcohol and prostitution, and
finally suffering a brutal death. Harold was a witness to her
death and that incident set Harold on a path of destruction.
Although his uncle and aunt
informally adopted him, Harold never felt a familial connection
and never felt safe. In order to drive away the images of his
mother’s death, Harold turned to the numbing effects of drugs.
In and out of incarceration and addicted to cocaine, Harold’s
life began to mirror his mother’s; he was headed down a path of
no return.
But miracles happen when we
least expect them and, in Harold’s case, his came when a friend
asked him to join a gym. Harold found that he loved the sport
of competitive power lifting and, with a newfound interest and
sense of freedom, he was able to stop his drug abuse and win a
world championship in the sport.
Written with great
sensitivity and brutal honesty, God, Are You Mad at Me?
is a heroic accomplishment about ending destructive patterns and
playing the hand that life deals you with dignity and an
enlightened perspective.
